6. Caterpillars and candy canes
Making the shift from a learning professional who focuses on capability building, to a performance partner who starts with work design, begins internally.
Of course, that doesn’t mean things around you will necessarily change.
Your job title won’t change. Your responsibilities won’t change. Your team name won’t change.
But inside, you’ll feel different.
It’s a bit like realising you no longer believe in Santa. You don’t have to tell anyone - but you know something others don’t.
The shift is absolute and irreversible.
And at first it’s uncomfortable - I’m sure The Very Hungry Caterpillar felt some friction when he finally escaped his cocoon.
But the best part is that ‘learning’ is an expertise you’ll always have. It’s just that now you can put it to better use. Rather than it being what defines you, it becomes one tool in a broader, more effective toolkit.
Changing your identity is free, but it’s not easy. You don’t need to take a course or buy a product. You just need to make the decision.
And once it’s changed, you’ll be ready for the biggest transformation in the history of our profession.
Yours,
- Ant
